Aviation Museum Flying Boxcar Open House
Sunday May 3, Noon to 5pm
(Hagerstown, MD — April 30, 2009) The Hagerstown Aviation Museum will hold a Flying Boxcar Open House at Hagerstown Aircraft Services on Sunday, May 3rd, Noon to 5pm. See the latest acquisitions!
Fly-bys of museum aircraft, featuring the Fairchild PT-19 and other vintage planes, will be held at 2:00pm.
Last November, with cold temperatures and very brisk winds, the museum's C-119 and her crew returned home from Greybull Wyoming. Even though hundreds of people showed up for the historic return and landing, it was not the most pleasant day for an outdoor event!
This Sunday will be the first time that the public can tour the museum’s 1953 Fairchild C-119G Flying Boxcar. This event will also be the first time that the public can see and hear the C-119’s eighteen cylinder radial engines roar to life. At 3:00pm, C-119 pilot Frank Lamm and co-pilot TR Proven will climb into the cockpit, complete the pre-start engine checklist, prime the engines and then press the engine starter switch.
The Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone was one of the most powerful radial aircraft engines produced in the United States. The engine is a twin row, supercharged, air-cooled, radial engine with 18 cylinders. Power ranges from 2,200 to over 3,700 hp. The 3350 radial engine was also used on the B-29 Superfortress.
The museum will also have a display of photographs, artifacts and videos of Hagerstown's aviation past.
The museum’s commemorative DVD, Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar-Hagerstown Homecoming, and the museum’s new book, Hagerstown During WWII, will be available for purchase at the May 3rd event! The DVD truly captures the excitement of the five-day journey across the country with over 100 minutes of video footage and still images. The book has over 600 photographs of the Hagerstown home-front depicting a time when the entire community worked together to win the war. Both the DVD and book can be purchased at museum events and through the museum's web site: www.hagerstownaviationmuseum.org.
The Flying Boxcar Open House is located at Hagerstown Aircraft Services at the Hagerstown Regional Airport. Turn off Rt.11 onto Basore Drive at Tony’s Pizza and follow the signs. This Open House event coincides with the 6th Annual Museum Ramble (for more information, see: http://museumramble.marylandmemories.org).
For the latest update on this event call 301-733-8717 or visit www.hagerstownaviationmuseum.org. The Hagerstown Aviation Museum also has a display and exhibit at the Discovery Station hands-on museum, located at 101 West Washington Street. See: www.discoverystation.org.
